Preselling a Product or Service so You can Make the Sale!

Preselling a product or service will greatly enhance the number of visitors that convert to sales for your business or on your website. It is not rocket science, really. It is just a simple process of interesting your potential buyers enough to stay with you during your offer.

Keep your visitors interested enough to hear what you have to say is the key. If they like what you are saying or like the benefits your products or services have, they will buy.

There are some shocking reasons why most advertising methods that fail to give you the desired marketing results. Below are some common advertising methods used for preselling a product or service online:

1. Click for Hit or Traffic Exchange Programs.

With these types of programs, your advertisement is forced to sell from the start by either giving them a direct link to your sales page or giving a very brief description about what you are selling. It's very difficult preselling a product or service with a few short lines of text or when you send visitors directly to your sales pitch.

And besides, who are you advertising to on these types of programs anyway? Other advertisers! Regular non-business type people looking for products and services don't generally sign up for these programs to find products. Other advertisers sign up to advertise their products or services and may get interested by your ad, but you will be missing over 98 percent of your market.

Not a great choice for preselling a product or service unless you are advertising an advertising service or product.

2. Classified Advertisements, Web Directories, and Bulletin Boards.

How much room do you have to presell using these sources? About four lines or less, no more than 70 characters per line. It's difficult enough to try to squeeze in your primary product or service using these advertisements let alone tell people how they will benefit from them. These are not a great choice for preselling a product or service. These are all sell sell sell!

3. Guaranteed Visitors, Targeted Traffic, and Guaranteed Clicks.

These are very costly and usually deliver "hits" to your website, but is your site actually being viewed by a person? It is difficult to tell unless you are making some sales from these visitors, which rarely happens.

Generally, your website link is displayed as a pop up or pop under on a dead website and is blocked by popup blockers, or the unique hits are generated by amazing robots that could care less about what you are selling. The ones that do actually display your site generally do not target your market and only display your sales page unless you create a splash page preselling a product or service on the page you are advertising. Let me know if you have had great results using these methods because I have not found one yet that has given me a free signup, let alone a sale.

4. Link Exchanges, Site Submissions, and Reciprocal Links.

These are a dime a dozen and are just like classified ads. It is difficult preselling a product or service with a limited amount of advertising space. Besides, these websites or exchange pages are mostly buried deep within a non-related site or even within a related site, but when your link is among tens, even hundreds of other links, how often is your site going to be found.

The only benefit I can find with link exchanges is that they provide an avenue for search engine spiders to find your website and actually get your website spidered more often.

You also have to be careful about who you link your site to as many search engines don't like when you link to insignificant sites or unrelated content. These are good for link popularity if you do it right, but still, it is very difficult preselling a product or service using a small text link or general description.

If you do link with other websites, I recommend using text links above other forms of advertising since the links are more Search Engine friendly.

5. Search Engines.

By themselves, they are great if your website is properly developed and optimized. They help people find your website, for free if your website is properly optimized, or by directed marketing using pay per click advertising. They get people to go to your page on impulse if you are ranked within the top twenty of the search engines. But once they get to your site, they may see your sales pitch right away and disappear, barely ever viewing more than the entry page of your site.

There are also paid per click ads you can use with search engines (Adsense is one of the best). These do produce visitors to your site, but most of the time, visitors that reach your site in this manner are trying to click on these ads to make money for themselves. They try to cheat the system by visiting your link through their AdSense ads and just visit random sites for money. These paid for click advertisers are smarter than that, but the click to your site still happens, then they leave without viewing any of your information or buying.

By filling your web site's pages with positive benefits, basically preselling a product and service, most often this will result in people wanting to buy your product or service.

6. Banner Exchanges and Banner Ads.

Sell sell sell! Need I say more! Search engine robots frown upon banner websites. People see them and immediately know you are trying to sell something. Properly targeted and displayed can be beneficial, but I wouldn't waste any money with banner exchanges. Avoid their use since they don't count as links into your site and won't get your website spidered by a search engine.

7. Free For All Links.

Do not ever use these as they are a waste of webspace and time on your part. They will actually lower your overall Alexa ranking and link popularity if you own your own website and will turn search engines away from your website. Most of the time when you submit your link (and remember, it's very difficult preselling a product or service with a link) to an FFA, it's gone within about ten minutes anyway. It's buried so fast that no one will ever find your site. No one is looking there to find you products or services anyway. Those are mostly for advertisers desperately trying to market their websites, not knowing what they are doing.

8. Press Releases.

Wait, here is another great tool to advertise your product or service. If, that is, you can write a press release more than 500 characters in the proper format. Content, as defined by search engine robots, is any text greater than 500 characters that contains keywords that relate directly to your product or service or the information you are trying to put across to your readers. You can write all of the content you want, but if you fail to use the right amount of keywords or place them in the wrong spots throughout your content, search engines won't find them or they will not index it correctly in their databases and you will find it difficult preselling a product or service with a press release. However, press releases are a great way to get your preselling word out to the world.

9. Email Advertising.

Using email preselling a product or service is a lot easier than most other forms of advertising, but then you are stuck with trying to get your emails read by people who want your product or service. Safe Lists are good to protect you from SPAM, but they are just like click for hit exchanges in that they are advertising to other advertisers. Bulk email is out of the question unless you have a personal relationship with the list you are emailing to (ie your database). Friends and family are generally good, but after a while they may get sick of your badgering.

When pursuing the email route, it is best to network with other businesses within your niche that have a relationship with their database and who are willing to blast an email to that database on your behalf. This can foster great results and allow you to expand your own database rather quickly.

In order to drive buying customers to your site, you must learn about preselling a product or service with a great sales letter. Preselling a product or service to potential buyers is easy if you create a preselling marketing platform with benefits, positive descriptions, testimonials, and other perks that will show your visitors you care about them and that you aren't just out for their money. A lot of businesses miss this step and go right for the money, a big no no in all business.

To learn as much as you can about preselling a product or service, learn proper advertising techniques.
