Six Basic Fears - Which One Is Holding You Back?

The six basic fears are all centered on negative suggestions that your mind has received sometime throughout your life. There are more than six fears, but there are six fears that can make or break success in anyone's mind.

Here are the symptoms of the six fears from "Think and Grow Rich" by Napoleon Hill and how to redirect that energy toward your success.

1. The fear of poverty - This fear comes from Indifference, Indecision, Doubt, Worry, Over-Caution, and Procrastination. To better break it down, it is caused by the lack of ambition, willingness to tolerate poverty, acceptance of your financial situation, laziness, lack of initiative, imagination, enthusiasm, or self-control, permitting others to do your thinking for you, having alibis or excuses designed as cover up your failure, habit of looking to the negative side of every circumstance, talking of possible failure instead of concentrating on success, waiting for the "right time", putting off success until tomorrow.

The simple fix for the first of six basic fears is to change your way of thinking from negative to positive, stop being lazy, and find ways to improve your faulty areas. If you are having trouble in a specific area, find a book or a tape on the subject to help you realize what you need to do to correct the flaw.

2. The fear of criticism - This fear comes from Self-Consciousness, Lack of Poise, Personality, Inferiority Complex, Extravagance, and Lack of Ambition. This fear is just as wide spread as the fear of poverty. This fear comes from nervousness, timidity, lack of voice control, lacking a firmness in decision, personal charm, ability to express opinions, side-stepping issues, using "big words" to impress others without knowing the meaning, imitating the ways other people dress, boasting, spending beyond your income to keep up with everyone else, laziness, slow at reaching decisions, lacking tact in manner and speech, and unwillingness to accept blame for your mistakes.

The simple fix for the second of six basic fears is much the same as the first fear. Change your way of thinking through auto-suggestion and studying on the areas you need to fix.

3. The fear of ill health - This fear comes from Auto-Suggestion, Hypochondria, Exercise, Susceptibility, Self-Coddling, and Intemperance. This fear comes from the habit of using negative self-suggestions, looking for symptoms of all kinds of diseases, experimenting with your diet, habit of talking about illness, worrying about having to pay doctors fees, habit of making a bid for sympathy, the habit of using drugs or alcohol to destroy pains, or the habit of reading patent medicine advertisements.

The simple fix for the third of six basic fears is to exercise regularly, stop looking for sympathy, and fill your mind with positive self-suggestion - you are healthy! When you really get sick, you will know it. Eliminate the cause of the illness, don't use drugs or alcohol. Those just make it worse. Avoid watching the World News - talks about possible outbreaks or diseases that might occur can cause you to worry about getting that disease.

4. The fear of Loss of Love - This fear comes from Jealousy, Fault Finding, and Gambling. This fear comes from being suspicious of loved ones, not having absolute faith in anyone, finding faults with people, and the habit of cheating, gambling, stealing or other hazardous chances to provide money for loved ones - belief that love can be bought.

The simple fix for the fourth of six basic fears is to trust your loved ones, never resort to gambling or stealing, and have absolute faith in them. Their true colors will shine through if they are being unfaithful. If you have this fear, you could cause a loved one to resort to being unfaithful in an attempt to find better love.

5. The fear of Old Age - This fear comes from the tendency to slow down or to develop an inferiority complex, believing you are too old merely because you reach a certain age. This causes the habit of killing off your initiative, imagination and self reliance or making you want to dress younger to feel younger.

The fifth of six basic fears is easily avoided. Life is about being born, growing older and wiser, fulfilling a mission or purpose, and dying. What you accomplish in your life should be of great importance to you - pass on a legacy of you! You will get older - this is a given. Don't let it get you down, it is a natural process of life. Concentrate this fear in the direction of your success. Produce something your children and children's children can remember and carry on.

6. The fear of Death - The last of the six basic fears is very natural and something everyone thinks of one time or another in their lives. This comes from thinking about dying instead of making the most of your life! It is caused from lack of purpose or a lack of suitable occupation.

To conquer the last of the six basic fears, establish a burning desire for achievement in your life, you can remain busy and aiming toward that success instead of thinking about dying. Death is a normal occurrence in life...it is the final chapter of your book of life. It is going to happen, just get over it. Find something thrilling to do in your life, like shooting toward your burning desire. When it is your time to die, be ready for it, not afraid of it.

A lot of these six basic fears are caused by bad habits. Learn how to control your habits to avoid the six basic fears.
