Who You Know is What Networking is All About!

Who you know is very important in networking, whether it is in your personal life, financial life, or in business. And you do know a lot of people if you really sit down and think about it.

The first thing you need to do to determine who you really know is to write down everyone you stay in pretty close contact with on a regular basis. These are the ones that are in your "Close Network" or your "A" list. These are the people that are most responsive to you. These are the people who you are comfortable talking to about anything and people you aren't afraid to ask for their help.

Some people have a lot of people in their networks; some do not. Knowing NOW really does not matter as much as who you are going to know later. But, you have to start somewhere, so start with the people who you know now.

Information you want to write down for the people you know is full name, address, phone number, email address, and some notes about their likes, dislikes, occupation, skills, hobbies, and various other things to quickly recognize their value to you later. In Networking Tools, you will find a very helpful spreadsheet called "Keeping In Touch". I encourage you to download this free tool to help you establish your database.

Now that you have your list of people you know started, continue by writing down all of the names and subsequent information about all of the people you know but do not know all that well. These are the people you know from school, work, stores, shops, friends of friends, email buddies, and everyone else you can think of. Don't leave people like doctors and lawyers off your list. These are the people who can help you out the most with their skills and abilities. Remember, you are listing EVERYONE you know, not just the people you want to know.

The people who you know that you don't contact as frequently are known as your "Passive Network" or "B" list. Write down all of their contact information and other information. If you do not know their contact information but know how to contact them, get in contact with them and get their contact information. It is very important to get their contact information so you can communicate with them more regularly and keep in touch with them. This is discussed later.

Of the people who you know that you do not have contact information for or do not know how to get a hold of them, place them on your "Cold Network" or "C" list. These are people who you know but do not have contact information for. You must make a good attempt at contacting these individuals in order to make your network larger and more powerful.

Once you are done creating your lists of people who you know, you are ready to learn how to add people to your list.
